The concept of Schoolhouse house started in 1971 by a group of Davidson parents who Were looking for a preschool/kindergarten based on sound principles of early childhood development. As the concept evolved, the families chose the format of a cooperative. They met in several locations including the Cornelius Elementary Agriculture Building and the Masonic lodge. In 1991, the families purchased and renovated the former one-room Caldwell Station School. The philosophy has remained in tact through the years.- a progressive, child directed environment for the child to learn at their own pace and to learn through play. The School continues to serve about 40 families per year in the North Mecklenburg area. The Schoolhouse has always had strong ties to the community, offering scholarship and community service outreach.
